Supporting Families, Preventing Tragedies

What do we want?

We want to not be needed anymore, but until that happens…

Our mission statement: Supporting families, preventing tragedies

Our core goals

1. To support families in need due to needless death or injury (or near miss) of their family member through maternity system failure within New Zealand. To give them they very real help that they need at the time, most suited to their situation. To guide them through the complex systems in place now, and to aid in the creation of simpler systems for the future. To assist them to procure changes that ensure, wherever possible, the same failings don’t occur again.

2. To provide robust evidence-based information accessible to all consumers to ensure that their decisions truly are fully informed.

3. To call for an independent perinatal database that collects internationally comparable information on all New Zealand births, aligned with an epidemiology unit that will ensure the data is well utilised – this information on trends in care needs to be accessible to the public.

4. To voice the need for an independent review/inquiry into New Zealand’s maternity system, including but not limited to a review of the training and supervision requirements of maternity practitioners.
